In our Hotel, guests are very open about themselves, so we end up knowing some of them very well, their likes and dislikes. We have decided to reciprocate a little, and interviewed our Reception Manager Liz. She told us a bit more about her experience at Los Telares and La Gomera.
What brought a Scot to la Gomera?
During my first holiday in 2002 I fell in love with the island, the magic of nature, the humbleness of its people, but also the similarities the island has to the north of Scotland, just with lovelier weather! Soon after my third holiday I decided to give up the rat-race and stay.
What’s your favourite leisure activity?
I love hiking and especially the mixture of always having walks that include mountain and seaviews together. Dancing is also a great past-time of mine and so a Canarian island that has ‘fiestas’ every weekend in the Summer season just throws Salsa-dancing in my path, never a dull moment!
What is your fondest memory so far of life on La Gomera?
Well of course, the birth of my son comes first but I’ll never forget the kindness of the local community when I burst a car tyre. I was about to take out my mobile to call the garage when people appeared from everywhere to change the tyre, give me mint-tea to calm me down, and take the opportunity of hugging my child and getting to know us a little better. It’s an impression of the locals that remains to this day.
What’s the funniest thing you’ve experienced working at Los Telares?
Actually, it was not long ago … a guest called and told me she’d taken her car and gone out on her own for a day around the island. She had closed the apartment door leaving her husband locked in! Of course, we were happy to use our spare keys to open the door and let the captive out. We will never know if it was on purpose…
Do you imagine staying on the island permanently?
I think after 12 years that is a very clear YES! I’m fortunate enough to have a permanent position in Los Telares thanks to Luisa and Carlos having given me the opportunity in 2012 to prove my capabilities as reception manager and general busy body!!! They have also allowed me to reconcile my needs as a single mom, so I fully enjoy the wonders of my favourite island.
